Euro up on talk of EU package, trade jittery
The euro was up at $1.2856, from $1.2714 late in New York on Friday, but had been quoted as high as $1.2948 at one point. Details of the EU plan were sketchy and traders were wary of taking the euro too high given past failures to get a concrete deal done.
Traders said there has been talk that the European Central Bank could set up a forex swap facility with other central banks or even buying government bonds, though they added any bounce could easily wane if nothing concrete is decided soon.
"The initial reaction has been positive, the initial details have been encouraging, but market's sentiment still a bit fragile as we're waiting for a some more detail," said Bank of NZ currency strategist Mike Jones.
"I think euro will consolidate until we get some further details, people are a bit wary they might be disappointed as in the past."
The euro also rose to 118.28 yen, from Friday's late level of 116.07, while the U.S. dollar firmed to 92.10 yen, from 91.56 yen. The dollar index .DXY was down 0.52 percent at 84.01.
High yielding currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars also firmed as investors showed more appetite for risk, while U.S. stock futures jumped and oil regained some ground to $76.26.
EU sources said Germany, which faces public opposition to bailouts, was resisting any deal that put no limit on the potential financial assistance for countries such as Portugal, Spain or Ireland and wanted the IMF involved.
But a compromise was being discussed that included loan guarantees by euro zone countries worth 440 billion euros, a stabilisation fund worth 60 billion euros and a 100 billion euro top-up of International Monetary Fund loans. EU sources also said the Governors of ECB met on Sunday to discuss the crisis.
Over the weekend, the International Monetary Fund approved a 30 billion euro package of aid for Greece, with the first payment available as soon as the middle of this week.

"They need to step up very quickly and let us know what happened here and what steps need to be taken," he said. "I don't think you need legislation in this area. You need the regulators to step up."
Speculation initially centered on the possibility that there was a massive "fat finger" accidental trade by an individual but that has now been discounted.
Another theory is that a huge computerized trading program was triggered by a big currency-related play amid the deepening Greece-related crisis.
The meeting, set for Monday morning at 1000 EDT/1400 GMT, was called by SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro, and is expected to address whether they need to implement a market-wide stock-specific circuit breaker which would halt sudden plunges in individual stocks, a source familiar with an investigation into the events said.
It will also discuss finding ways to possibly rein in market orders and will address stop-loss selling, the source said. Any new rule would need approval from a majority of 5 commissioners.
The meeting will include bosses of NYSE Euronext NASDQ OMX Group Inc., Direct Edge, a private U.S. trading venue operator and BATS Global Markets, the third-largest exchange operator, sources said, but won't include futures or options exchange heads, one source said.
Exchange heads will also meet Treasury officials at 1400 EDT/1800 GMT, that source said.
Some of the exchanges are, in addition, expected to participate in Congressional hearings by the Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, the source said.
Representatives for Direct Edge and BATS confirmed they will attend Monday's planned meeting. NYSE and Nasdaq declined comment.

Ordinary investors, increasingly tied to market developments through their 401K plans and other investments that were whipsawed last week, faced the same dilemma over why and whether it might happen again.
"It's a confidence issue... until you get away from finger-pointing and get to a bottom line explanation of exactly what happened, it can't bode well for investors," said Alan Lancz, president, Alan B. Lancz & Associates Inc., an investment advisory firm, based in Toledo, Ohio.

Dodd, who appeared on CBS with Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Tennessee whose assistance he needs to steer a massive financial regulatory bill through the Senate, deplored the fact that sophisticated markets were so out of touch with the real economy that ordinary Americans must live in.
"We need some answers pretty soon," he said, because unruly markets are a threat.
"You are getting some of this casino environment that is appearing in our markets," Dodd said, fostering economic risk that will force the government's hand on regulation.
"We need to get in place a bill, have the president sign it so that we have tools to protect our economy from these kinds of events," he said.

a writing lesson ...
I would like to share a writing lesson I learned from our American teacher when I was a college student a few years ago.
In our first writing class, she brought a red apple, put it on a transparent glass plate, placed the plate on the desk near the window, and adjusted it a few times. The sunlight was streaming on the red apple and its holder, and casting a narrow shadow on the desk, a glimmer of smile was on her face. As she was walking away from the plate slowly, and looking around us, she started to talk, I couldn't remember the exact words she said, what she told us roughly as follows.
'I would like you to describe the red apple and its surrounding in about one hundred words, which must be strict to the sketches of its physical appearance. After that, you are going to add another one hundred words to stretch its look to other areas that are related to it, for example, giving a brief description of an apple tree, an apple orchard, its sweetness and nutrition, etc. "
We were stunned, biting our pens, or gazing at the apple, or peeping at each other, as our teacher was pacing up and down the class room, saying a few encouraging words now and then, giving out a few hints here and there. However, it didn't help, a large portion of our papers remained empty, we were only hear the clock ticking faster and faster, and ticking louder and louder, the time was running out ...
The underlined theme she taught us is that to learn a language, especially a foreign language, we must get back to the basic, the square one, and start from the scratch, like children, who usually describe things and their surroundings specifically and vividly and concretely, as apposite to them, we adult tend to think abstractly and generally, and use many big words (abstract and general) which is the number one enemy of the language learning.
For example, most of us know words like fruit, vegetable, light, we may not understand, cranberry, kale, dusk (or twilight) ... on the contrary, children usually pick up these specific words before they learn the categorical term, like fruit ...

As I am taking a backward glance at my childhood and my adolescence, those happy moments are flowing through my mind, like a movie, my mom and dad were teaching my brother and me to swim, watching the colorful sunset together from the lookout, reading the bedtime stories for us …
One particular scene is coming up to my mind at this moment, and lingering, it was an autumn night, one of the beautiful nights in four seasons, stars were twinkling in the dark blue sky, and tree leaves were shimmering under the silvery, full moon as they were swaying slowly with the cool breeze. My brother and I went to bed reluctantly at 9:30, after playing.
Suddenly, I was hearing a gentle voice in my dream, getting louder and louder, and my dream was broken and gone after my brother and I were woken up by my mom,
"what's going on?" I asked in my sleepy voice as I was rubbing my eyes, and looking at the clock, it was close to the midnight.
"Come, come to the window." She whispered.
As we were gazing into the starry sky, a shining object flying across the heaven far, far away, leaving a bright, slightly curved, long path, as its tail was blurring and fading away. "Wow, awesome!" We were astonished and excited, it took us a long time to fall back into sleep.
When I was a boy, I didn’t think too much about why my mom woke us up along with other things my parents did for us, although some seemed a bit uncommon, I have taken things for granted. As I’ve grown up, replaying those scenes, I always come to the same conclusion.
My parents have taken us with them to embark on the adventures together, to open the windows for us to see the wonderful world, to share wonder and excitement with us … They have been passing their enthusiasm, optimism, wisdoms and many small things on to us, things money can’t buy.
I joined a global consulting firm after graduated in China seven years ago, and my work projects have taken me to many places and countries around the globe… and those moments are always with me.
One particular scene is coming up to my mind at this moment, and lingering, it was an autumn night, one of the beautiful nights in four seasons, stars were twinkling in the dark blue sky, and tree leaves were shimmering under the silvery, full moon as they were swaying slowly with the cool breeze. My brother and I went to bed reluctantly at 9:30, after playing.
Suddenly, I was hearing a gentle voice in my dream, getting louder and louder, and my dream was broken and gone after my brother and I were woken up by my mom,
"what's going on?" I asked in my sleepy voice as I was rubbing my eyes, and looking at the clock, it was close to the midnight.
"Come, come to the window." She whispered.
As we were gazing into the starry sky, a shining object flying across the heaven far, far away, leaving a bright, slightly curved, long path, as its tail was blurring and fading away. "Wow, awesome!" We were astonished and excited, it took us a long time to fall back into sleep.
When I was a boy, I didn’t think too much about why my mom woke us up along with other things my parents did for us, although some seemed a bit uncommon, I have taken things for granted. As I’ve grown up, replaying those scenes, I always come to the same conclusion.

Wow, wow, wow, everyone in the party mood!
I am not supposed to log on to the internet as I've promised my friends, "No internet while on vacation". You see, I am on vacation, not even half way through yet, and still have two weeks to enjoy, and in the middle of nowhere.
Somehow, I miss this community after the noisy parties and a few drinks. Yeah, I drink for the moment of excitement and celebration. As we are saying bye bye to 2007 and unfolding our arms to embrace the new year, 2008, we are excited about the challenges and opportunities lying ahead of us.
May I say a few words?
First of all, thank to China Daily for providing a home for us.
Thank you for posting questions and answers.
Especially, thank you for spending your precious time on reading and replying my posts.
I've found out that my posts for the last year are scattered around, some of them may be worth being revisited, so I said to myself, "Why not put the best of them together?" I would like to open a thread for them, like punching my school assignments with three holes and putting them into a binder.
Those are not self-help manuals, formulas for success, pieces of advice ...
Those are small things, simple things, things here and there, reflecting the ways I look at things ...

When we first met
I could not see your spirit at all;
I had to tease it out, with the feather of my breath.
And now our souls are like twin censors;
Flames from the very first breath, that lit the cosmos
Fuming themselves almost to heaven's door;
From there one day, God himself will tease out our essence
And we will shoot upward, like stars in the archer's bow
To fall back again, into the tapestry of his long enduring,
Our eyes the mirrored galaxies
Of the planes that he breathes through.

Who must overturn the chest to previous life,
Bits of love affairs stirred up alive?
As life reclaims its due
And the cycle starts anew,
We meet, fall in love, then part
For the sake of our bound lot.
Your brows knit in frown deep,
For rosy cheeks yellowing with age, you weep.
Should annals of history turn to dust,
Still my love would be burning and never rust.
Of thousands of waters bustling to East,
I take one scoop of love to taste,
Obsessed with the butterfly
Fluttering from your fairy life.
Your moonlit hairs, white as snow
Outshine the picture of our parting in woe.
Incense burning away,
Who's touched by what I pray.
I invite the Moon to witness
The purity of my reminiscence.
Our love will last flawless
